Guardando "Interstella 5555" si ha quasi la sensazione di essere tornati ai tempi dei concept album di Pink Floyd e Who, che davano vita a film musicali come "The Wall" e "Tommy". La capacità dello staff guidato da Matsumoto, però, è quella di creare un film interamente musicale, del tutto privo di dialoghi (anche le canzoni sono senza testo) ma che sa raccontare con chiarezza ed efficacia una storia certo non semplice, vista anche la breve durata della proiezione. Con questa struttura, è chiaro che l'efficacia delle singole sequenze dipenda in buona parte dalla riuscita delle musiche, e se da questo punto di vista l'inizio è ottimo (davvero bella "One more time"), nella parte centrale il film sembra perdere di coesione. Prova ne è la visivamente bellissima sequenza della salita dei protagonisti verso il castello del cattivo, rovinata da un brano che fa il verso a Mozart e sembra del tutto fuori luogo in questa pellicola.
